Since the introduction of the Alpha 7R V in October 2022, all new Sony Alpha cameras have come equipped with an "AI processing unit". But what exactly does this processor do, and how can it help you take better photos?
The AI processing unit is dedicated to artificial intelligence processing, including deep learning. This state-of-the-art technology uses detailed information about human skeleton forms and poses to dramatically improve the camera’s subject recognition accuracy.
In the video above, you can see how much the subject recognition of the Alpha 7R V has evolved from the previous model that doesn't have an AI processing unit.
In addition to humans, animals and birds, Sony cameras with an AI processing unit can also recognise insects, cars, trains and airplanes, providing even greater flexibility and reliability when shooting both stills and movies.
Heads and bodies are also recognised in addition to eyes for the Human, Animal, and Bird settings. This is very useful when shooting subjects that are facing away from the camera.
What's more, Auto White Balance (AWB) has evolved in tandem with the autofocus, because the AI processing unit helps to achieve more accurate white balance in difficult lighting, such as when the subject is in shadow.
