The Art of Wedding Photography
The Art of Wedding Photography
A guide to capturing emotion, culture, and cinematic storytelling across Aotearoa & Beyond
Introduction
Hello, my name is Michael Kouk. I am a professional wedding photographer and have shot over 800 weddings across New Zealand, Australia, and beyond.
Wedding photography is more than taking beautiful photos. It is the art of storytelling, culture, and creating imagery that feels alive.
Through my experience working with diverse communities, especially the vibrant Indian community, I focus on capturing weddings with authenticity, energy, and cinematic character.
This guide breaks down the styles, techniques, gear, and workflow that form the foundation of my approach to wedding photography.

1. Understanding Wedding Photography Styles
Traditional vs Contemporary Styles
Traditional photography gives families the classic portraits they love. Contemporary photography brings natural expression, movement, and emotion. I blend both approaches so couples receive timeless imagery alongside relaxed, candid moments that reflect real Kiwi spirit.
Editorial and Fine Art Approaches
Editorial and fine art styles focus on intentional framing, clean tones, and cinematic depth. By using Aotearoa’s landscapes and soft natural light, I create imagery that feels refined yet authentic. My signature look often comes from working with the FE 24mm F1.4 GM and my favourite storytelling lens, the FE 50mm F1.2 GM, which gives immersive depth and emotion.
Photojournalistic Techniques
This is where genuine storytelling truly shines. No stiff poses, no forced smiles, just real life unfolding. Aunties cheering. Kids sprinting around. Groomsmen cracking jokes. Families embracing. And during Indian weddings, every ritual carries meaning, colour, and emotion, making this approach even more powerful.

2. Choosing the Right Equipment for Wedding Photography
Recommended Sony Cameras for Capturing Weddings
NZ weddings move quickly and Indian weddings move even faster.
My main camera of choice is the Sony Alpha 7 IV. Reliable autofocus, great colour science, and strong performance in all lighting conditions from Haldi mornings to late night receptions.
Essential Lenses for Wedding Photography
My signature storytelling lens is the FE 50mm F1.2 GM. This is the lens I use the most throughout the day. It has a cinematic softness, beautiful depth, and natural rendering that works perfectly for both intimate moments and wide NZ landscapes.
Other lenses I use when needed
But the 50mm remains on my camera most of the time because it captures emotion and authenticity better than anything else.
Lighting and Accessories
To adapt to fast-changing NZ skies and dynamic Indian wedding environments, I rely on
-
On camera flash
-
Off camera lighting for cinematic portrait effects
-
Harness Strap to hold Two A7IVS
-
Diffusers and stands
-
Wireless triggers
I use a Pro Mist Filter 1/8 to create a glowing dreamlike cinematic atmosphere that enhances highlights without overwhelming the image.
I also carry spare batteries and multiple 256GB high speed SD cards so I never miss a moment during long multi day weddings or high energy celebrations.
At certain weddings, I bring my own creative props like sparklers and champagne bottles. Not just for poses, but to help the bridal crew loosen up, have fun, and create unforgettable hype moments.
The goal is always to make the experience enjoyable so the photos feel natural, energetic, and alive.
Lighting and thoughtful extras help emphasise emotion, colour, and atmosphere, especially during vibrant Indian ceremonies.

3. Tips for Capturing Unforgettable Moments
Techniques for Candid Shots
Weddings can often feel formal, but I love flipping that energy and transforming the day into something more relaxed, fun, and epic.
I vibe with guests, laugh with the bridal party, and blend in with families so they feel I am part of the celebration, not just the photographer.
By understanding personalities and breaking the ice early, people feel comfortable and forget the camera is there. That is when the best candid shots happen naturally.
Creating Emotional Impact Through Imagery
Emotion creates the heartbeat of the story
-
A groom breathing deeply before seeing his bride
-
Parents offering blessings
-
Quiet moments between rituals
-
Sangeet dance circles exploding with joy
-
The raw first look moment between a bride and her dad seeing his daughter for the first time, one of the most emotional moments of the entire day
-
The powerful moment when the groom sees the bride for the first time, whether during a first look or as she walks down the aisle, pure magic every single time
These are the moments that stay with couples for life.
Composition and Framing
I use Aotearoa’s landscapes for cinematic wide images and Indian decor elements for colourful storytelling.
Using depth, symmetry, movement, and natural framing helps elevate each image and guide viewers into the moment.

4. Enhancing Your Wedding Photography Skills
Workshops and Resources
I run hands on workshops focusing on lighting, storytelling, natural posing, and understanding multicultural weddings including Indian rituals.
These sessions are designed for photographers working in real NZ environments.
Practice and Portfolio Building
Shoot often and intentionally.
Capture different cultures, events, lighting conditions, and real everyday moments.
Everything you practice becomes part of your creative signature.
Networking with Other Photographers
The NZ photography community is small, friendly, and supportive.
Connecting with others, second shooting, and learning the timing of different cultural traditions helps everyone grow together.
