Learn astro photography on the Hauraki Gulf's stunning Rotoroa Island

About the event

This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy two days on Rotoroa Island, a wildlife sanctuary just an hour from Auckland. We'll be taking advantage of the island's dark night skies to learn astro photography. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the beautiful beaches and experience the conservation of iconic New Zealand species during your stay.

The package includes:      

  • Water Taxi to and from Auckland central  
  • Accommodation for the night on the island (boutique hostel)    
  • A night under the stars learning how to capture the night sky and the Milky Way    
  • A processing session to make the most of your RAW files    
  • A guided nature walk on the island    
  • A $50 donation to the Rotoroa Island Trust, a nonprofit restoring the island sanctuary

Please have the weekend of 25th & 26th July available in case the weather doesn't permit the event going ahead on the planned dates.

Please note: This event is suitable for all skill levels but at a minimum you should be comfortable operating your camera in manual mode and be able to navigate through your camera's settings.
 

Techniques covered

  • Astro photography - from the basics to the more advanced capturing techniques
  • Post processing - learn to make the most of those RAW files, create & stitch panoramas and stack images
  • A guided nature walk with one of the knowledgeable and passionate island rangers

What to bring

  • Food for two days (there are cooking facilities on the island)
  • Linen (pillowcase [pillow is provided], sleeping bag or duvet/bed sheets, and towels)
  • Camera and lenses (wide angle for astro, others for wildlife/landscape during the day)
  • Tripod
  • Torch or head torch
  • Laptop to follow along during processing session (optional) - NB: Download a free trial version of Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop if you don't have this software application already

No, you must bring all food and beverages that you'll require for the weekend. You will need to bring lunch and dinner for Saturday, and breakfast and lunch for Sunday, as well as snacks and sustenance for the astro evening. Basic provisions such as tea, coffee, sugar and oil are provided at the accommodation. There are cooking facilities at the accommodation too. Tap water is filtered and safe to drink on the island.
Bring warm clothing, wet weather gear and sturdy footwear. The island is predator free, biosecurity measures need to be followed - All bags/containers sealed with no holes, check bags for any pests, check your footwear is clean and that there is no soil or seeds in laces or treads.
