I was born in Scotland in 1969 and emigrated with my family at the age of 11 to Brisbane. My first experience with taking photos was a couple of years earlier, using a small compact film camera around the docks of Aberdeen. I had no idea what I was doing, but was thrilled when I got the film developed and I could see the results of my adventures around Aberdeen. Hard to believe I actually walked 3km from my Grandparents to the city centre all by myself at the age of 9. How times have changed.

It wasn’t until much later, in 2006 in fact, on the return trip from a holiday back to Scotland I bought my first Canon DSLR. I still didn't know what I was doing, but have since and continue to, spend countless hours learning all I can about the art of taking photos.

Some 6 years ago I started getting paid for my photography, slowly increasing to where now it has become a big part of my overall income. I’ve been self employed for nearly 20 years and it has been more important now than ever before to have multiple income streams.

In October 2017 I started running Phocademy photography workshops for beginners and beyond. Since starting I’ve hosted over 50 Brisbane photography workshops, and although quite nervous in the beginning, I now feel quite comfortable teaching small groups of like minded people. It has now become an enjoyable passion to pass on some of what I have learned during my journey to become a photographer.

In December of 2018, out of an interest in going mirrorless, I attended a Sony roadshow event, where they allowed you to get hands on with their Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras. I liked them so much, I bought one at the end of that night.

Then in January the next year I received a phone call from one of the Sony reps I had met back in December, and was asked if I would like to become a Sony Digital Imaging Advocate, running Sony workshops through their soon to be released Sony Scene platform. Of course I jumped at the chance and have been running both Phocademy and Sony workshops since.

What is your go to in your Alpha kit and why?

My go-to is my Alpha 7R III coupled with the 24-70 ƒ/2.8 GM lens. This is actually quite perfect for the kind of events I do, especially with the added flexibility using the Super 35 crop mode. It's also wide enough to allow me to capture the odd landscape or cityscape.

Most memorable moment shooting with Alpha?

My most memorable moment is actually during my very first hands on experience with the Alpha 7R III, which was during the Sony Roadshow event in Brisbane last year. So memorable in fact, I bought my Sony kit that very night.
