Sony has a range of on-board Digital Microphones designed to give you the best quality audio without the need for extra cables or pre-amps and mixers. This is achieved through the use of the Multi Interface Shoe & Digital Audio Interface.
The Analog Signal Chain
The analog signal chain using traditional cables vs using Multi Interface Shoe can add unwanted noise at connection points and throughout the length of audio cables.
The longer the transmission path to the Analog/Digital converter and Digital Signal Processor (DSP), the more likely unwanted noise will be introduced to the audio signal.
In addition to the chances of unwanted noise in the Analog Audio Transmission there is also the possibility of signal degradation resulting in lower quality sound recording.
The all Digital signal chain helps avoid these unwanted effects.
The Digital Signal Chain
The digital signal chain avoids traditional cables by sending the digital audio signal directly through the Multi Interface Shoe which avoids unwanted noise.
Having the Analog/Digital Converter & Digital Signal Processor built into the microphone, the audio interface allows noise-free, high quality transmission of digital audio signal to the camera.
If a Digital Microphone is used on a camera not supporting a Digital Audio Interface,
the Selector Switch on the microphone can be moved into the Analog position.
Allowing the camera to handle Analog/Digital Conversion & Digital Signal Processing.
