Join me on a hunt for some of nature's most fascinating creations

About the event

Join me on a fun nature walk where we will 'hunt' for fungi to photograph (in situ). We'll cover camera settings, lighting and macro photography tips for photographing fungi and any other small natural treasures we may discover.

This walk will be self-guided, however I will be on hand at all times to discuss settings, techniques, lighting, composition and answer any questions.

The Fern Walk in Totara Reserve is a 5.3km loop track. It requires low to moderate fitness. Depending on how often we stop, and how long we spend photographing things, it should take approximately 2-3 hours to complete the loop.

The track is located in the Pohangina Valley about 30 minutes drive from Palmerston North. From Ashhurst, drive north along Pohangina Road, then turn right onto Pohangina Valley East Road. Keep your eye out for the signage for the Fern Walk, you will see a small car park on the side of the road. There is a long drop toilet at the start of the track.

Should the weather prevent these workshops going ahead as planned a postponement date for each workshop will be as follows:

  • Saturday, April 10 - postponement date Sunday, April 11
  • Saturday, May 8 - postponement date Sunday, May 9

A full refund will be provided should these events be cancelled.

Techniques covered

  • Camera settings and useful gear
  • Composition
  • Making the most of the natural light
  • Using Lume Cubes to light your subject
  • Using a macro lens
  • Getting creative

What to bring

  • Suitable walking shoes and clothing
  • Something to kneel on when shooting low - a garden knee pad, towel, raincoat/jacket or similar (I often just wear rainproof over pants as this saves having to carry extra stuff)

  • Macro lens if you have one (optional)
  • Telephoto lens if you have one (optional)
  • Snacks and/or drink (optional)

Event FAQs (For general FAQs, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page)

If you let me know when you register I can request a loan camera for you to use.
Check the weather forecast and dress to suit - fungi like damp environments.
There is a small parking area at the start of the Fern Walk, alternatively we can leave cars at V&R Studio Gallery, 101 Cambridge Road, Ashhurst and carpool from there. Please contact me in advance to arrange this.

Rachael was clearly passionate about photography. I hadn't used my camera in months and this reignited the spark I once felt for photography.”
