About the event
Portrait Basics – Camera, Light & Posing
Want to improve your portrait photography but not sure where to start?
Portrait Basics – Camera, Light & Posing is a hands-on beginner workshop designed to help you understand the foundations of creating great portraits without making things overly complicated.
Whether you’ve just bought your first camera, you’re still learning how to use manual settings, or you simply want more confidence photographing people, this workshop will guide you through the basics in an easy-to-understand and practical way.
During the workshop, we’ll cover:
- 📸 Camera Settings – Understanding aperture, shutter speed and ISO, and how they affect your portraits.
- 🎯 Focus & Depth of Field – Where to focus and how to create sharp subjects with beautifully blurred backgrounds.
- ☀️ Understanding Light – How to recognise and use available and natural light for flattering portraits.
- 📐 Composition – Simple techniques for creating stronger, more visually interesting images.
- 🧍 Posing & Direction – How to position and communicate with your subject so they feel comfortable and look natural.
- 📷 Hands-On Shooting – Put everything into practice while photographing a model and receive guidance throughout the session.
This isn’t a workshop where you’ll spend the whole time listening to theory. You’ll have the opportunity to shoot, experiment, ask questions and learn by doing.
Who is it for?
This workshop is ideal for beginner photographers, hobbyists, or anyone wanting to build a stronger foundation in portrait photography.
All camera brands are welcome. You don’t need expensive equipment or previous portrait photography experience — just bring your camera, a lens and a willingness to learn.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a better understanding of your camera, how to work with light and how to confidently direct and photograph a person.
