An Introduction to Emotional & Story-Driven Portrait Photography
Sony x Lucius Workshop Series
Have you ever taken a technically strong photo that still felt like something was missing?
In this introductory talk, Lucius explores the hidden layers that make portraits feel alive — moving beyond camera settings and lighting setups into connection, storytelling, and human presence.
Many photographers focus on achieving technical perfection, yet struggle to create images that carry emotional depth. This session examines why portraits often feel visually strong but emotionally distant, including the tendency to prioritise technique over connection, treat subjects as visual objects rather than collaborators, and overlook the narrative context behind an image.
This talk will explore:
• Why some portraits feel alive while others feel empty
• The Multi- layers of impactful portrait creation
• Visual Design — composition, lighting, colour, and environmental context
• How human connection shapes the final image — interaction, trust, and emotional atmosphere
• Story & Emotion — subject presence, narrative tension, and visual storytelling
Through real case studies and behind-the-scenes examples, Lucius will also share how professional portrait sessions are approached — from creative preparation and subject observation to emotional direction, image selection, and post-production philosophy.
This session also touches on how modern technology and tools are reshaping portrait photography, allowing photographers to move beyond documentation and into immersive storytelling experiences.
Designed for photographers who want to move beyond technique and start creating images with presence, narrative, and emotional impact, this talk also serves as the conceptual introduction to Lucius’s upcoming hands-on workshop series, where these ideas will be expanded into practical shooting, lighting, and editing sessions.
