My story
Tim Hawkins is a highly respected Sydney-based Director of Photography with a career spanning over three decades:
Hi, So who is Tim Hawkins?
Well, I’m a kid from Sydney’s Western suburbs who’s managed to build a 30-year career in broadcast television. My journey with Sony began at the age of 19 when I received my B grading as a News Cameraman. This marked the start of a lifelong relationship with the Sony brand — I’ve continuously had at least one professional Sony camera in my crew car for the past 30 years.
I learned and honed my craft at the Nine Network working for shows like A Current Affair, Sunday, and Sixty Minutes. After 14 great years, I entered the freelance world and haven’t looked back. I feel like I’ve become a creative shooter, with an eye for detail, who loves telling stories. The years since 2008 have been a blur. I haven’t stopped shooting and I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of Australia’s leading directors, producers and production companies. I feel very honoured and proud to say that.
So what have I done since 2008?
Well I’ve worked on a lot of TV shows, travelled just about every inch of this great planet and shot some truly amazing things. I’m really proud of my work on genealogy series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’, summiting a Himalayan mountain with documentary series ‘Todd Sampson's Body Hack’ and of course the popular home renovation series ‘Selling Houses Australia’.
I’ve acted as the DOP on many prime-time TV programs and I’ve managed large camera departments for some of our most popular reality television programs. Whilst I love the big shows, I have always been compelled to return to single-camera documentary filmmaking and long-form lifestyle television.
I’m passionate about the Australian television industry and believe it has a strong future. I love talking about Sony and have been a prolific advocate of their products for many years, which is why the Sony Ambassadorship is a great fit for me and a role I'm proud of.
I feel honoured to work in this industry and I’m really excited to share my knowledge, experience, and love for Sony products.
