Bird Photography in Byron Bay

The day begins in the dark at Cape Byron, the easternmost point of the Australian mainland and the first place on the continent to catch the light. We'll walk the lighthouse track as the sun comes up over the water, working the headland while the light is low and warm capturing the large array of coastal birdlife. In season, Whales pass close enough to the headland to change the subject entirely.

The headland teaches you the hard version of bird photography: fast subjects, unpredictable flight paths, and a background of moving water. You'll learn to set up your camera so it can keep up.

By mid-morning we move inland to the wetlands, where the pace changes completely. Herons, egrets, spoonbills and jacanas work the shallows, and the challenge shifts from speed to patience — finding a clean line of sight, using still water as a mirror, and waiting for the moment rather than chasing it. Shade and reflected light keep the wetlands workable long after the headland has gone harsh.
