Learn the basics of food photography with Dylan

About the event

In collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary Photography (CCP) and Pony White, join award-winning photographer and Sony Digital Imaging Advocate, Dylan Giannakopoulos for an exciting workshop exploring the basics of food photography. As most Melbournians know, Fitzroy is home to some of the country’s finest cafes, bakeries and restaurants. During this workshop, Dylan will take you to one of his favourite cafes, Pony White.

The workshop will start with a short presentation at CCP where you will learn about the fundamentals of food photography from both a technical and creative perspective. Then, after a short walk to Pony White, the photography will commence. Whilst you fight the urge to try the delicious dishes that the chef has selected for us, Dylan will be there to help you get that perfect flat lay that would leave even the fustiest foodie or influencer drooling!

At the workshop you will:

  • Learn about the three elements that make up the exposure triangle (ISO, aperture and shutter speed) and how to balance them to achieve correct exposure.
  • Understand how to use depth of field to direct viewers and eliminate distracting elements.
  • Discover how to manipulate natural light by using light modifiers such as reflectors and scrims.
  • Master control of aperture priority and manual camera modes, and how to read your camera’s histogram.

This workshop is well suited to beginners, skilled enthusiasts, intermediate photographers who would like a refresher on the basics and of course foodies & caffeine addicts!

Strictly limited to 8 attendees, the small group structure of the workshop ensures that Dylan can provide plenty of one on one tuition. After the workshop, participants will be invited to join a private Facebook group which is strictly limited to past attendees of Dylan Gianna Photography Workshops. The Facebook group offers members a space to share their images, ask questions and learn tips and tricks from Dylan.
