Join Luke Tscharke and Paul Hoelen, on an exciting 4-day, 3-night photography workshop on Bruny Island in October. We've timed this workshop to coincide with dark skies providing the added opportunity to photograph the western fall of the Milky Way. Plus, with the increased solar activity going into the solar maximum, we might even be lucky enough to witness and photograph the incredible Aurora Australis.
Having visited Bruny Island many times, we are excited to share our favourite locations and help you discover the island's diverse landscapes. We'll explore the stunning coastlines from both land and water, including a scenic Pennicott cruise that will give us unique perspectives and plenty of opportunities to create amazing images.
Throughout the workshop, we'll dive into the art of landscape and astro photography, and Paul and I will be there to guide you every step of the way. Bruny Island is one of Tasmania's most picturesque locations, and we can't wait to help you capture its beauty.
Join us on this fantastic journey as we immerse ourselves in the world of photography, learn new techniques, and create lasting memories together. It's going to be a blast, and we can't wait to share our passion for Bruny Island with you!
Luke Tscharke Photography is an authorised nature based tourism operator with Parks Tasmania.
Small Group, Big Experience
This exclusive photography workshop on Bruny Island is limited to just five participants with two workshop leaders. With such a small group, you'll receive personalised attention and guidance from Paul and I throughout the entire experience. I truly believe that smaller groups create a more engaging and enjoyable learning environment, allowing us to get to know each of you better and tailor the workshop to your individual needs and goals.
To ensure your comfort and privacy, each participant will have their own room during the workshop. This means you'll have a personal space to relax and recharge after a day of shooting, without compromising on comfort. A lucky guest will also have the chance to pay a supplement for the Master Suite with it's own ensuite. Please notify us at time of booking if you'd like to reserve this option.
The workshop is self-catering, giving you the freedom to choose food according to your own preferences. This flexible arrangement adds to the laid-back and easy-going atmosphere of the workshop, allowing us to focus on photography and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Bruny Island.
With a small group, we'll be able to move around the island more easily, fitting comfortably in our vehicles and simplifying logistics. This not only enhances the learning experience but also fosters a sense of camaraderie and friendship as we explore and photograph Bruny Island together.
Flexible Itinerary and Locations
One of the key advantages of this workshop is the flexible itinerary, which allows us to make the most of the prevailing weather conditions. We will use planning tools, apps, and forecasting services to determine the best locations for each day, ensuring that we will be at the right place at the right time to capture the most stunning images possible. As part of the workshop, we will also share our planning processes with you, providing valuable insights into how to adapt and optimise your photography based on the conditions.
Potential locations include Cape Bruny Lighthouse, Cloudy Bay, Cloudy Bay Lagoon, Adventure Bay, Fluted Cape, The Neck Lookout, Mount Mangana

Accommodation
During our workshop, we'll be staying at Cloudy Lagoon Estate on South Bruny Island. The property offers views of the Cloudy Bay Marine Conservation Area and serves as our base for exploring the island's photographic locations.
Each participant will have their own private bedroom, with an option to upgrade to the master suite for an additional fee (available for one participant on a first-come, first-served basis).
Our two vehicles will take us to various shooting spots around the island, including nearby Cloudy Bay and Cape Bruny Lighthouse, as well as our other locations. This setup allows us to easily access different landscapes and lighting conditions throughout our stay.
The estate's living areas and kitchen provide space for us to review our work and share meals. Cloudy Lagoon Estate offers a comfortable environment where we can relax and focus on developing our photography skills between outings.
Meals
The workshop is designed to be self-catered, providing participants with the flexibility to accommodate their dietary preferences and requirements. Before we head over to Bruny Island, we'll have the opportunity to purchase groceries and stock up on provisions for our stay. The villa's well-equipped kitchen allows us to prepare our own meals, but we'll also have the chance to dine out at local pubs and eateries as the flexible itinerary allows.
Personal Capabilities and Experience Level
Whether you're a beginner looking to learn the ropes or an experienced photographer seeking to refine your skills, this workshop caters to all levels. Prior experience with night photography is beneficial but not essential.
The shoot locations for the workshop are selected to be easily accessible, typically requiring only short walks of no more than 10 minutes. However, to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, a basic level of fitness is recommended. Throughout the workshop, Luke and Paul will be right there beside you, offering personalised assistance and guidance while also photographing alongside you. This unique opportunity allows you to learn directly from them, observing their techniques, and gaining invaluable insights to elevate your own photography skills.
