Many portrait workshops follow a familiar structure — a model, a lighting setup, and an opportunity to take photographs. While valuable, these experiences can often begin to feel visually similar. This workshop is designed to offer a different pace and perspective.
Within Asian portraiture, beauty is often expressed through subtlety rather than intensity — soft tonal transitions, restrained emotion, delicate gestures, and the quiet relationship between light and shadow. Rather than seeking dramatic spectacle, the image often invites stillness, atmosphere, and nuance.

Photographing these qualities requires more than technical precision. It asks for sensitivity to light, composition, texture, and presence.
In this workshop, Lucius Yin will share his approach to portrait photography through careful lighting design and intuitive direction. Participants will observe how small adjustments in shadow, pose, framing, and visual rhythm can transform the emotional character of an image while maintaining natural skin texture and refined tonal depth.

The session will also feature models styled in traditional East Asian garments, including Chinese Hanfu and Japanese Kimono. These elements introduce not only visual richness, but also a deeper exploration of East Asian aesthetics — the flow of fabric, the balance of silhouette, the poetry of gesture, and the atmosphere created through restraint and detail.
Combining technical instruction, live lighting demonstrations, and guided shooting sessions, participants will be able to observe the complete creative process from concept and setup through to the final image.
This special event is presented in collaboration with Digidirect. Attendees will also have access to exclusive on-the-day offers for Sony’s latest camera systems and equipment.

Designed for photographers interested in portrait, fashion, and editorial photography, this workshop offers an opportunity to engage with portraiture through a more contemplative and culturally nuanced visual language.
