1 on 1 Private Wildlife workshop photographing the Flying Foxes of Sydney

About the event

The Flying Foxes of Parramatta Park are devilishly difficult to photograph. When the summer days are very hot they will exhibit survival behaviour and fly down to the water to cool their  bellies and take a drink in the late afternoon.  They are very tiny, very fast ,and the dusk light in forest surrounds creates challenges with the lighting. If you wish to push your camera skills to a higher level the results can be extremely rewarding with some expert advice.  Be prepared to get out of your comfort zone and learn how to adapt your camera to the environmental needs. They are very exciting to chase!

Techniques covered

  • Wildlife settings
  • Low light settings
  • Shooting for speed and distance

What to bring

  • Camera with fast SD card
  • Zoom lens - 200mm will be a little short so the longer the better - if you are shooting on a Sony camera talk to me about borrowing a long lens for this shoot.
  • Shoes stepping in water and sand
  • A sense of fun!

Event FAQs (For general FAQs, please visit the Frequently Asked Questions page)

i can arrange a zoom lens for your Sony camera
we are sitting on grass or standing against a weir. Shoes need to be practical.
Best results are 1 on 1 or. 1 on 2 - you will be learning lots in this shoot.
The bats exhibit this belly dipping behaviour when the temperatures are very hot. This is a summer event only and should be booked a few days prior when we know the weather. Should the bats not fly I will repeat your workshop at no extra cost, although i have not yet had this happen.
