Sunset Landscape Photography at Cahills Lookout, Katoomba

About the event

Complete a day exploring the Blue Mountains with a sublime sunset session at Cahill’s Lookout, one of the most stunning vantage points in Katoomba. As the sun sets behind the Megalong Valley, Boars Head, and Narrow Neck Plateau, you’ll capture breathtaking golden-hour and blue-hour light while refining your landscape photography skills in real time.

This hands-on session is perfect for photographers of all levels, whether you're just starting out or looking to master the nuances of sunset and blue-hour photography.


What You’ll Learn

📷 Mastering Sunset Photography – Understanding light, composition, and exposure for golden-hour, sunset, and blue-hour shots.

📍 Location: Cahill’s Lookout, Katoomba, NSW
🎒 What to Bring: Camera, wide-angle lens, tripod, extra batteries, memory cards, and warm clothing.


Fitness Level

This session is easily accessible with minimal walking, though some workshops may include optional short hikes. Check the grading below for guidance:

  • Grade 1 – Easy access, suitable for all.
  • Grade 2 – Some walking, small formed stairs with handrails.
  • Grade 3 – Short bushwalks (<5km), some inclines, stairs, and uneven terrain.
  • Grade 4 – Longer walks (<10km), steeper inclines, rough terrain, and moderate fitness required.
  • Grade 5 – Remote bushwalking, rugged terrain, experienced hikers only.

Licensed & Accredited

Jay is a licensed photography tour operator under an NSW National Parks Eco Pass License # LIC20/116 and holds Remote Area First Aid Accreditation.

From time to time, Sony Digital Imaging gear may be available for hands-on use. Availability depends on Sony’s loan stock and logistics. Let me know in advance if you’d like to try specific gear!

*from time to time we will have Sony Digital Imaging equipment to try while we are on our sessions. This will always be dependent on what Sony has available to loan and our ability to get gear to our location. Check in with me before hand if you want to loan anything in particular during the session and we will try to coordinate it for you.
Conditions will vary, but the upper Blue Mountains is generally cold at sunrise, so I recommend dressing in warm clothing, with gloves and beanie. Some sessions will require hiking appropriate clothing with good hiking boots preferably with high ankle support.
Yes. Our meeting points will begin close to accessible parking areas. Some parking may be on a meter, so be sure to check where you park if payment is required.
Fitness Requirements - We will generally be meeting and working at an accessible lookout, close to vehicles with little to no stairs to manage, but some sessions will require some adventurous bushwalks. As such, check the Location for the "Grade" of each session: Grade 1 - Easy to access for all levels. Grade 2 - Some walking and small number of well formed stairs with handrails to navigate. Grade 3 - Small distance bush walking (<5km) with some inclines and stairs. Stairs may be unformed with no handrails. Walks may be on muddy tracks. Moderate levels of fitness required. Grade 4 - Long distance walks (<10km) with inclines, stairs, muddy and slippery unformed tracks and a high degree of self awareness, good mobility and good fitness required. Grade 5 - Totally bush. Tracks are largely unformed and over uneven terrain often in highly remote and declared wilderness areas where minimal impact techniques are employed. Experienced bushwalkers only. High degree of mobility and fitness required.
