Join me, Luke Tscharke, and fellow Sony advocate Eric Peng for a fun evening of light painting under the stars. This hands-on session will show you how to create stunning night images using long exposures and light painting techniques. This event will feature the new Sony FE 16mm f/1.8 G lens, with loan copies available to try during the workshop.
We'll meet after dark at a coastal location in the Hobart area, using the moonlight reflecting on the water and stars above as our backdrop. You'll learn how to set up your camera for night shots, try different light sources, and create colourful trails and patterns in your images.
This is a relaxed, creative session where you can experiment with new techniques and enjoy your photography. If you're just starting with light painting or wanting to build on existing skills, you'll pick up some great techniques to add to your photo toolkit.
During the evening, we'll cover both the technical and creative sides of light painting photography. Eric and I will show you different techniques, help with your camera settings, and give you hands-on guidance throughout the session. We'll start with the basics and then explore more creative approaches as the evening goes on.
Bring your camera, a tripod (essential for long exposures), and your creativity. This session works for all skill levels, though you'll get more from the evening if you know your camera's basic manual settings. Don't worry if you're still learning though, we'll help you along the way.
We'll have a range of light painting tools for everyone to try on the night, including coloured LED lights, light tubes, and more. If you've got your own light painting tools you'd like to experiment with, feel free to bring them along.
Sony will also have some loan equipment available during the event. You can let us know your preference for loan equipment via a form sent to you after registration.
Just to note, we won't be using steel wool or any materials that could harm the environment.
If the weather doesn't cooperate with heavy cloud or rain, we'll reschedule and let you know at least 24 hours beforehand. Light cloud cover is fine and can actually add some interesting texture to night photos, but we need reasonably clear conditions to make the most of the stars and moonlight.
