What is image quality and how to get the best

About the event

This workshop demystifies the wonderful world of image quality. You have spent heavily in premium cameras and lenses, yet something's missing, not convincing? The reason is rarely the equipment. Even with the best gear in the world, it takes only subtle missteps in settings, focus, handling to erode image quality.

Small differences — a single stop here, a fraction of a second there — can tear holes in the images of top-tier lenses. Conversely, well-used mid-range kit can outperform superior equipment that has been used poorly.

Make a small investment in this session for a big, lasting return on your lenses and cameras. Learn how can you extract the maximum from your kit. The skills for improving image quality will last you forever.

This workshop shows you where image quality is won and lost, and how you can win. Always.

Understanding image quality

In plain language, we unpack the optical and sensor-related factors – some pretty nerdy – that determine image quality:

  • Lens aberrations and their real-world impact
  • Resolution, sharpness, contrast
  • Sensor and pixel size
  • Common sources of degradation: focus error, movement, atmosphere
  • Controls that matter most: aperture, diffraction limit, exposure time
  • Digital corrections: what helps, what harms, and when to use them
  • Output issues: screen vs print

Problem images

Bring your favourite or problem images to share analysis. We can look at them to analyse problems, see how to improve. This helps put the theoretical information into practice and helps you remember it.
