All you need to know to create a great photobook

About the event

Have you always wanted to make a photobook? Or maybe you’ve been disappointed with the ones you’ve made before?

This workshop is designed for photographers who want to turn their images into outstanding photobooks  — professional, artistic, and impressive.

We’ll keep it small to give time for individual ideas and practical suggestions. The format is effective and proven: learn in the morning, create in the afternoon.

In the morning session we’ll cover everything you need to craft a beautiful, high-quality photobook, including...

  • Iconic photobooks
  • Smart pre-production decisions to save time and money
  • Smooth, efficient workflow
  • Colour management and technicals of how to ensure top results
  • Key design, print, repro concepts to understand
  • Preparing files for production and working with printers
  • Legal niggles

Phew! This is a masterclass in book production squeezed into a morning! There’s so much information that I will send participants a copy of the presentation.

The afternoon session will be all about bringing your book to life. This is the best bit. We'll work together to experience the magic of putting your own pictures into a design that brings out their best. I’ll handle the software, you direct the creative process. Together, we’ll build a live sketch of your book layout. By the end of the session you will have a draft design sketch of your book. How good is that?

What’s more you’ll get a file you can actually work on yourself. This is because we will use the Affinity app that you can download for free!

Please bring:

  • Bring a bunch of your photos, ready for page.
  • An outline of your aims and ideas for your book, basics such as size and extent (number of pages).
  • Any inspirational or aspirational books (physical or digital).

To ensure everyone gets individual attention, the group is limited to four participants — each receiving a dedicated 30-minute personal design session (worth several hundred dollars on its own).

What do I know about books?

Not only have I written 40-odd books on photography, I designed several of them myself and am a veteran of industry tools such as Aldus Publisher, Quark XPress and InDesign. Unlike most photographers and authors, I work directly on the production files with publishers’ design teams. In short, I know what makes a photobook truly work — both visually and technically.
