Hands-on coaching and mentoring matched to your skills and experience

About the event

Ready to take your photography to the next level?
Or what you need is a confidence boost to go pro?

I'm offering hands-on coaching matched to your skills, experience. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned shooter, we’ll work together to turn ideas into results.

One session with me packs more value than an entire weekend workshop.
We’ll follow a proven structure: one focused hour, a 30-minute break, then another focused hour—flexible and extendable as needed.

We can talk indoors over a laptop and coffee. Or we can go out for practical photography: Ponsonby is ideal with its lively street life, hilly park, light industry or 19th century villas. Your session, your choice!

What can we cover?

  • How to get the best out of your camera and lens(es)
  • How to make your camera handling, technique, or creativity brilliant
  • Prepare for competitions, exhibitions, or major projects
  • Break through creative blocks to energetic invention
  • Master editing, workflow, or file management for great efficiency

I’ll demonstrate techniques, review your images, and share live edits: on camera, on screen. All to power and enthuse your progress: you’ll get simple, actionable takeaways that could last a lifetime.

Whatever your camera or experience level, we will focus on what matters to you — whether it's camera basics, creative direction, editing, or copyright. Together, we’ll build a practical strategy to elevate your work.

Your session is all about your goals.
Satisfaction guaranteed, with follow-up support and options to continue learning.

After you book

I’ll get in touch to understand your aims and tailor the session, making sure we have everything in place for success. It works best with one person, but we can negotiate working with a couple for a session.

If the date and time isn't right, we can make it perfect! We can arrange a time that's best for you.

About me

With decades of experience — editing photo magazines, writing forty photography books, leading workshops in 10+ countries, lecturing at university, and judging global competitions — I bring deep, wide-ranging and real-world expertise to every session. But don't worry: I work with complete beginners as well as Masters level students.

Let’s unlock your photographic potential!

This workshop was much better than I expected. I am a real amateur and felt I could be out of my depth, but Tom made you very welcome and comfortable.”

Tom won’t teach you how to take good shots - he does something more valuable. Tom teaches you to imprint souls in your image that reach out.”
