The spotted shags should be nesting at Ohau, making for great photos!

About the event

Interested in practising, or learning how to photograph birds in flight? Join wildlife and conservation photographer Simon Pierce for this informal and hopefully action-packed morning workshop focused on the nesting spotted shag colony at Ohau Point, north of Kaikoura. The shags should be in their spectacular breeding plumage, and busily building their nests from seaweed – making for lots of fantastic subjects from this easily-accessible viewpoint.

This will be a great opportunity to learn all the tips and techniques for one of the most entertaining forms of wildlife photography. Simon will also bring along his monopod and tripod, in case you'd like to try using support with longer lenses, such as the 200–600mm.

Techniques covered

  • Birds in flight photography
  • Use of monopods / tripods for wildlife photography

What to bring

  • A camera with a telephoto lens (>200mm will likely work best), if you have one
