Explore Auckland's Point Chevalier Beach and Harbour View Reserve

About the event

Join Sony Digital Imaging Advocate Tom Ang for an informal walkabout at Point Chev in Auckland.

For those who would like, Tom will guide you in location portrait photography, working in pairs. Otherwise, just enjoy a walk in picturesque Harbour View Reserve and Point Chevalier Beach.

Bring yourself, camera gear (and togs if you like to swim) for a relaxed morning of photography and chat. There's plenty to explore and photograph at the beach and in the reserve... or simply have a lovely time.

We'll meet at the mid-level picnic tables towards the changing rooms end of the beach. Park on Harbour View Road. (Don't go to Coyle Park which is at the far end of Point Chev.)

Use the opportunity to ask questions, pick up tips and techniques, chat with photo friends.

I'll set a project for those who'd like direction, or you can work on location portraits in pairs. Or else simply enjoy exploring the area. Watch the beach as the tide will be falling, leaving interesting patterns and puddles as the waters drop.

Schedule: Meet at 12pm (earlier if you come for a swim: I will be at the northern end, down from the changing rooms. High tide's 3.2m at 10:46am.).

Walkabout until 1:30pm. Continue with coffee at Point Chev Beach Cafe for those who wish: a short walk away, towards Coyle Park. (If it's very wet, we'll head to the café and have a photo talk instead.)

Token $20 to ensure those who book will attend.

Techniques covered

  • Ask Tom for help on any aspect of photography during the walkabout.
  • The location offers landscape, beach, sea views and portrait opportunities.
  • Use it as an opportunity to try out something you've never done before!

What to bring

  • Warm clothes and be prepared for rain. If there's a westerly, the beach will feel quite exposed.
  • Any favourite camera and lenses.
  • If you fancy a swim, bring togs. There's a changing room on the reserve by the beach.
