A guided photowalk through Camperdown’s urban light and street detail

About the event

Join Jay @ Scene House Sydney, proudly presented in partnership with EP Group, Sony Australia and digiDirect.

Explore one of inner Sydney’s most visually layered neighbourhoods in this guided photowalk designed for photographers wanting to strengthen their eye for street detail, architecture, urban composition and changing light.

Beginning in Camperdown, this session moves through a pocket of Sydney where historic terraces, old industrial details, textured streetscapes and creative inner-west atmosphere combine to create strong photographic opportunities across multiple genres.

Led by Sony Digital Imaging Advocate Jay Evans, the walk will focus on how to observe and photograph urban scenes with intent — from isolated architectural details and repeating patterns through to wider city storytelling, candid street moments and the use of late afternoon light.

As the afternoon progresses, we will work toward golden hour and sunset, finishing at one of Jay’s favourite inner-city green spaces — Camperdown Memorial Rest Park — where open sightlines, layered trees, sandstone details and changing sky colour create a very different photographic mood.

This event forms part of the Scene House Sydney event series, designed to help photographers explore practical shooting in real environments while building stronger creative habits.

📸 Locations & Visual Highlights

During the walk we will work through selected pockets of Camperdown and neighbouring Newtown, with likely subjects including:

  • Historic terrace streets around Australia Street
  • Character facades and urban detail with graffitti and murals covering the streetscape.
  • Architectural lines around University of Sydney edges
  • Old brick textures and heritage details near Camperdown Commons
  • Street atmosphere around Missenden Road
  • Late light and open compositions at Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, the location of the famous mural wall and St Stephens Church and cemetery.

Each section offers different visual challenges and opportunities, making this an ideal walk for photographers wanting variety in a single session.

🌅 Finishing at Golden Hour

The final section of the walk is timed to coincide with golden hour and sunset, allowing participants to work with softer directional light, long shadows and changing sky tones.

Camperdown Memorial Rest Park offers a relaxed but visually rewarding final location where trees, pathways, heritage monuments and surrounding skyline elements create strong evening compositions.
