About the event
Kaikōura is one of the world's best marine wildlife destinations – and albatross are some of the world's most iconic marine wildlife. We'll do an extended (~4 hour) and exclusive boat cruise, not normally available to the public, to search out the best photo opportunities for albatross, other seabirds, and any other marine wildlife we might find along this exceptional coast. An expert guide / captain will be on-hand for assistance with bird identification and to inform on the amazing lives of these ocean wanderers.
Along with being a fantastic trip for all wildlife-lovers, this trip will offer wonderful photo opportunities. With a dedicated (large!) boat there'll be plenty of space for our small group, and we can maneuver the vessel for the best lighting and backgrounds. Even wide-angle photography is possible here, if the albatross choose to participate – and they usually do!
More details on the vessel and wildlife are available here: albatrossencounter.co.nz
Techniques covered
- This will be a practical workshop – I'll be offering informal advice on bird-in-flight photography, wide-angle wildlife techniques, and general marine wildlife and bird photo tips.
What to bring
- Cameras and lenses. There is a dry cabin in which to change lenses, but do bring lens-cleaning gear.
- Sun protection for you, and splash protection for your camera (particularly if you'd like to try wide-angle – the boat itself is dry).
- Snacks and water.
- Warm outerwear in case of inclement weather or cool breeze – please do check the forecast, but prepare for cold weather anyway.
