Learn to photograph the Tarkine's wild coast, rainforest and rivers

About the event

Join me and Tasmanian landscape photographer Paul Hoelen for five days photographing the Tarkine / Takayna in north-west Tasmania. We'll start with a night in Stanley, then spend three nights at Arthur River, close to the coast at the Edge of the World. The group is small, six to eight people, and we're both with you the whole time.

This workshop is open to photographers using all brands of equipment.

How the days work

We'll pick you up in Launceston on Friday 12 March and drive to Stanley, where we'll photograph the sunset and the next morning's sunrise. Stanley is also where we stock up on groceries for the days at Arthur River, and staying there saves a long drive back before dawn for the sunrise.

From Arthur River there's no fixed itinerary. We'll choose each location to suit the weather, light, wind, sea and tide, and talk you through how we make each call, so you can plan your own trips the same way. Sunsets on the west coast are a focus, and overcast, still days suit the rainforest.

Locations we're likely to visit, depending on the conditions:

  • Coast: Edge of the World, Sarah Anne Rocks, Nelson Bay, Couta Rocks, Stanley and The Nut
  • Forest: the Tarkine Drive, Sumac Lookout, Lake Chisholm, Milkshake Hills, Trowutta Arch
  • River: Rapid River, Julius River, Nelson Bay River, Dip Falls

Paul and I shoot alongside you, help with composition and setup in the field, and run image processing and review sessions back at base. With two of us, there are never more than four guests each. On Tuesday 16 March we'll drive you back to Launceston.

What's included What's not included
  • Five days of photography tuition from two professional photographers
  • Four nights of accommodation
  • Ground transport from Launceston and back
  • Image processing sessions
  • Park entry
  • Access to the workshop portal
  • Travel to and from Launceston
  • Meals and drinks
  • Travel and equipment insurance

Accommodation

On the first night we'll be staying in two heritage holiday homes in Stanley township, a short walk from The Nut, the beach and the shops. For the next three nights we'll be staying in two holiday homes a few doors apart in Arthur River, with the coast a few minutes away. The group is split across the two houses at each base.

Every guest has their own room. Couples, or two friends who'd like to share, can book a shared room at a lower price.

Meals

The Tarkine is a remote part of Tasmania, with limited places to eat out. We'll eat out when it suits the group and the day's photography, and make use of the full kitchens at our accommodation on other nights. We'll stock up in Stanley before heading to Arthur River. Bring snacks and a water bottle for the field. Meals and drinks are at your own cost.

Getting there

Please book your travel to arrive in Launceston at least the day before the workshop, and book onward travel for after we're back in Launceston on Tuesday 16 March.

Personal capabilities and experience level

Beginner, intermediate and advanced photographers are all welcome. You'll need a basic level of fitness: the walks are short, but can be on uneven or rocky ground.
