Explore Auckland at night while learning practical urban photography tips.

About the event

Ever wanted to learn urban & night photography in a casual group environment?

Join me for a casual, hands-on urban & night photography experience through Auckland CBD, where you'll learn practical tips for taking photos in an urban environment and making the most of photographing the city around you.

This is a walking photography experience, so comfortable shoes are recommended.

We'll start just after sunset and work our way into the night, so you can see how I approach the changing light then We'll explore the city after dark, stopping along the way to photograph different urban scenes and discuss how to approach them.

I'll share what I look for when I arrive at a location, how I find interesting light, how I compose an image and the camera settings I'd use.

I'll demonstrate different angles and perspectives, then give everyone the opportunity to put the ideas into practice and capture their own images.

What we'll cover

Approaching a scene:
Learn what I look for when deciding whether a location or scene will make an interesting photograph.

Finding interesting light :
Explore street lights, shopfronts, reflections, buildings and other available light sources.

Composition & perspective:
Look at different angles, focal lengths and ways of positioning yourself to change the look of an image.

Camera settings:
I'll share practical settings and explain how I'd balance shutter speed, aperture and ISO when shooting at night.

Urban night photography:
Learn how to use the city around you, including architecture, streets, reflections, colour and movement — to create engaging images.
